Research from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found almost 2,500 children were admitted to hospital each year due to poisoning, with chemical cleaners, detergent, bleach and nail polish removers the most common culprits.

Safe storage is vital, and disposing of any chemicals that are unnecessary and out of date can help protect families.

Harriet Shing said there were now 31 annual mobile collections across Victoria to give even more people access to this popular service. Trained chemical experts manage these mobile collections to ensure all items are handled and disposed of safely.

To view the latest schedule for mobile collections (up to June 2018) and information on what products can be disposed of go to www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/services-and-advice/households/waste-and-recycling/detox-your-home

Commonly disposed-of items such as paint and fluorescent light bulbs can be dropped off year-round at one of the 30 permanent drop-off sites across Victoria.

Quotes attributable to Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Harriet Shing:

“Regular clear-outs to minimise the potentially dangerous chemicals kept in the home are a great idea, but it’s vital to dispose of them properly.

“Tipping these poisons down the sink or into drains can be dangerous to human health if it gets into our water system, and the environmental impacts can be devastating.

“Protect the health of your family and the environment by taking advantage of this great service.”
