A world-class hospital is a step closer for Gippsland families with new artist impressions released today of the Andrews Labor Government’s massive expansion of Latrobe Regional Hospital.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing unveiled the first designs of the $217 million expansion that will meet increasing demand for the very best healthcare, right in the heart of the Latrobe Valley.

The designs reveal a first look at the maternity unit, which will be expanded with two new birthing suites, six new maternity beds, six special care nursery cots and a kids play area, ensuring even more local mothers can give birth closer to home.

This expansion will also deliver three new operating theatres, 44 new beds and an extra 14 new medical and surgical beds to deliver even more surgeries.

This will provide up to 6,200 more elective surgeries every year and cut waiting times, ensuring patients get the surgeries they need sooner, recover faster and get back on their feet.

There will also be six new intensive care beds, an additional emergency department bay giving better access to the very best critical care when emergency strikes, and 227 new car parking spaces.

The project will create 600 construction jobs and is expected to be completed in 2023.

Last year, the Labor Government delivered a $73 million Latrobe Regional Hospital redevelopment that included a bigger emergency department and new cardiac surgery facilities.

It’s just one of the projects the Government is delivering as part of its unprecedented $7 billion health infrastructure build program.

The Victorian Government is investing record funding for Latrobe Regional Hospital nurses and doctors to do what they do best, with $236.42 million allocated this financial year – a $16.2 million boost on the previous 12 months, and 44.2 per cent more than 2014/15.
